Awesome Season, Wesley Phoenix!

Awesome Season, Wesley Phoenix!

“The teams this year were quite resilient and very scrappy.  They never gave up and they battled to the end. Their sportsmanship was impeccable even in adverse situations.”

Coach Cassandra Horton speaks with pride about the 2021-22 Phoenix basketball teams, who finished strong this year. Both the boys’ and girls’ teams qualified for the playoffs, which is a feat only the top four teams accomplish. “We saw tremendous growth in our skillset,” she says. “Several players were more confident and a few elevated from a substitute position to starting.” Growth in sports isn’t just about increasing skill, though, and Coach Horton was proud to see team members grow in character as well. She says, “We won with dignity and lost games graciously.”

She hopes players will continue to develop their skills, nurture leadership, and remember that their character is who they really are. She gives this advice: “Don't compromise on or off the court.  Always act with integrity, and the sky's the limit.”

While this kind of learning happens on the court, instead of the classroom, Coach Horton says she can see the traits of an IB learner come through every day in these athletes. She says she immediately thinks of the players as communicators and principled. “It’s critical teammates communicate with each other on the court to ensure ease and flow in a game,” she says, adding that “there is an expectation that students are principled and act with integrity, not only in school, but in athletics as well.” Finally, she sees the trail of balance reflected in the way the student-athletes maintain their academics and athletic life, saying “we work diligently to nurture well-rounded students who will have a positive impact on society.”

Congratulations student-athletes, for an awesome season! Coach Horton also extends thanks and congratulations to our committed coaching staff. “Their dedication, willingness to work together and their heart for our athletes is unmatched,” she says. Kudos to Coaches Sturghill, Shepherd, Finney, and Smith.

We also want to recognize the students who worked so hard this season. Congratulate them when you see them in the halls!
