In honor of National Counseling Week, we spotlight Wesley's MYP Counselor, Ms. Courtney Scott. Ms. Scott brings over 13 years of experience as a school counselor to her current position, where she plays an essential role in supporting our mission to nurture the whole child. When we asked Ms. Scott how she discovered her passion for education and mental health, she admitted that even though she comes from a lineage of educators, she never expected to find herself in a school setting.

“Interestingly enough, my mom worked as a middle school educator for 30 years. During my teen years, I was very adamant about not following in her footsteps and expressed no interest in going into education whatsoever. However, if you’ve ever heard the saying, “If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans”, then you’ll understand the irony behind my story. Never say never.”

As the MYP Counselor, Ms. Scott focuses on guiding and preparing middle school students for the transition into high school. Her expertise is also in programming and conflict resolution. “One of the things that I try to emphasize with both students and families is that this is a time to hone in on choosing classes that reflect the student’s interests. Looking at aptitude, and a school’s culture and offerings are all critical in choosing a high school that will best help the student thrive, and develop into who they are destined to become.”

In her role as MYP Counselor, Ms. Scott is passionate about meeting her students' needs through implementing programs, and shares that “discovering and developing” new and engaging programs for students is "one of the aspects of her role that keeps me excited”. Ms. Scott is grateful that Wesley's culture fosters the growth and development of their teachers. “Wesley believes in Professional Development for its staff members, and I am thankful for the opportunities that I have been afforded to grow in my career.”

When Ms. Scott is not in the classroom, she enjoys the outdoors, local festivals, and travel. In her downtime, you can find her perusing home decor, venturing into new restaurants, and spending quality time with friends and family.

We appreciate everything Ms. Scott does for Wesley!
