PYP (Grades K-5)

The PYP programme is a curriculum framework designed for students aged 3 through 12. Wesley International Academy offers the PYP in grades kindergarten through 5th grade.

It focuses on the development of the whole child as an inquirer, both in the classroom and in the world. The students will be engaged as inquirers and thinkers and encouraged to make connections, think critically, work collaboratively with others, take action, and reflect.

There are six transdisciplinary themes interwoven within our curriculum and across the various subject areas that are studied in and outside of the classroom. The transdisciplinary nature of these themes allows the students to explore issues across the subject areas, encourage them to engage in a curriculum that is engaging, challenging, significant, and relevant to the real world, while also incorporating the attributes of the IB Learner Profile.

Our six transdisciplinary themes are:

  • Who We Are
  • Where We Are in Place and Time
  • How We Express Ourselves
  • How the World Works
  • How We Organize Ourselves
  • Sharing the Planet

The curriculum framework of essential elements: knowledge (themes and subjects), concepts, approaches to learning (skills), attitudes and action equip the students to be successful in our 21st century global society.

PYP Subject Areas

  • Reading/ELA
  • Mathematics
  • Social Studies
  • Science and Technology
  • Mandarin Chinese
  • Personal, Social and Physical Education
  • Arts: Music and Art

Through the PYP, we will…

  • address students’ academic, social and emotional well-being;
  • encourage students to develop independence and to take responsibility for their own learning;
  • support students’ efforts to gain understanding of the world and to function comfortably within it;
  • promote international mindedness through the learner profile attributes;
  • develop approaches to learning that will equip them for life in the 21st century.

As an Atlanta Public School (APS) charter school, Wesley International Academy follows the standards required by the State of Georgia and APS. We follow the educational guidelines set forth by the Board of Education. We use the Georgia Standards of Excellence, incorporating the IB methodology and approach within that framework. Our goal is for our students to exceed and excel beyond the standards set by the school system and be academically competitive by international standards of excellence. We have big dreams for our students and are working to develop a life-long discipline of learning.

5th Grade Exhibition

In 5th grade, students will participate in the 5th Grade Exhibition. The Exhibition is the culminating experience for IB PYP students. As an integral part of the PYP philosophy, the Exhibition offers students the opportunity to demonstrate both independence and responsibility for their own learning. The students undertake a collaborative, transdisciplinary inquiry process in which they research and identify real-life problems, investigate options, propose solutions, and take some form of action to aid in the solution to the problem. The is an exciting event each year, and we love to see Wesley students share their work!
