Volunteer and Visitation

We’re so glad you want to volunteer at Wesley! Volunteers are key partners in the success of any school.

We ask all WIA families to volunteer and be an active part of the WIA community, with single parent households contributing at least 5 volunteer hours within a school year and two-parent households contributing at least 10 volunteers hours a year. We appreciate our wonderful parents, grandparents, and community members who offer their time and energy to our school.

Volunteer Opportunities

Teachers and staff will make volunteer opportunities available starting August 22, 2016, allowing our administrative staff time to process the bulk of the Volunteer Release forms and to give our teachers the opportunity to bond with their class and develop specific volunteer needs.

Teachers and staff use Volunteer Spot to facilitate school-wide volunteer sign ups. Links and notices will be sent out by teachers when opportunities are available.

The WIA PTSA will also have volunteer opportunities available for their events, committees, etc. Please click here for those opportunities.

Volunteer Background Check Requirement

We are complying with the Atlanta Public School Volunteer Background Check policy. Under an Atlanta Board of Education administrative regulation, each school must conduct screening of all volunteers and all volunteers must have the following on file with the school:

A completed APS Volunteer Release Form and
A copy of a government-issued photo ID.

Due to the nature of most school volunteer opportunities, we will classify ALL volunteer opportunities as Level 2. We ask all parents/guardians to complete the Level 2 process, which is of no cost to parents. Forms will be available during Wesley Welcome Day on August 1 or you can download it here to submit with a copy of your government-issued photo ID at on August 1 or during the first week of school.

Level 2

Level 2 Background checks are required for all adults – parents, guardians, relatives, friends, neighbors, or community members – entering WIA to volunteer services or help with a classroom, event, or local field trip. If volunteers will have direct contact with students, we need the Volunteer Release Form and a copy of a government-issued photo ID.

This short form gives us permission to check names against the State and Federal Registered Sex Offender sites. Once cleared through this process, volunteers may sign up to get involved. Please note: This check will take approximately 1 – 2 business days.

Level 3
A more extensive Level 3 background check is required for those chaperoning day trips or overnight field trips. All potential chaperones go through the Georgia Applicant Processing Services (GAPS) fingerprint-based criminal history check. You will be responsible for getting registered in the system, choosing a fingerprinting location convenient to you, and paying the fee. Please note: This check will take at least 1 week to go complete and is valid for 5 years.

Please contact Mr. Earl King with questions and to set up an appointment to become Level 3 approved.

For questions regarding this policy overall, please feel free to email Dana Roberts.
