Wesley House and Mutual of Omaha Partner on Technology Project
The Omaha Star • April 20, 2006

Mutual of Omaha and the Wesley House have partnered in a long-term project to eliminate the digital divide in North Omaha.  The Technology Project scheduled to start this summer is a pilot program developed to address the disparities that exist with access to technology.

Mutual of Omaha will donate computers to the Wesley House to aid in the creation of a computer lab in addition to providing computers for ACADEMIC Summer Academy participants for use in their homes.  The Academy curriculum will require the students to utilize the Internet to complete assignments and locate information.   A variety of projects will be developed to teach students’ research methodology.

“We are excited about the partnership opportunities of this project,” say Felicia Rogers, Deputy Executive Director of the Wesley House.  “We have talked with the faculty at Metro Community College and they will assist in the design and layout of our new computer lab.  We feel that Mutual of Omaha is one of our strategic partners who will make this program state-of-the-art.”

According to Executive Director Paul Bryant, “This will be the official launch of the internet connectivity between a network of future leaders.  To prosper as a community in the future we need to be proficient in technology and we need to communicate with each other.”  The Wesley House Leadership Academy of Academic Excellence is looking to attract children and families in the community that want to excel.  “We are looking for the talent in North Omaha.  Our goal is to create a culture and environment where it is cool to be smart!”
