The Players Club at Deer Creek provided a perfect setting for the first annual Gale Sayers / Wesley House Golf Classic held June 19, 2006. Roughly 140 golfers participated in this golf tournament, the first event in Omaha to bear the name of the NFL Hall of Fame running-back Gale Sayers. The foursomes sold out 30 days in advance. The event raised over $60,000 for the Wesley House Leadership Academy. The tournament Chairperson was John Conley, President, Conley Investment Counsel and the presenting sponsor was Mutual of Omaha. The celebrity participants were Mayor Mike Fahey, Dana Altman, Gale Sayers, Bob Boozer, Johnny Rogers, Marlon Briscoe, John Beasley, Steve Taylor, Lawrence Pete, and Shawn Buchannan. The Wesley House is the oldest social service organization in the state of Nebraska. The original Omaha City Mission was founded in 1872 and continued the mission of empowering youth and families for 134 years.
