WIA Green & Healthy School Initiative (GHSI)
A ‘green and healthy’ initiative has geared up for WIA’s 2010-2011 school year.
WIA has pledged to be a Georgia Green & Healthy School, a Georgia Department
of Natural Resources program, www.greenandhealthy.org.
GOAL
For students, teachers and parents/guardians to work together to introduce, learn
and practice environmentally and nutritionally sound principles.
OBJECTIVES
1. To develop and utilize environmental learning units for each grade level, which are correlated with Georgia standards and IB units of inquiry.
2. To measure the benefits of the program by determining current environmental impacts and proposing more sustainable practices.
3. To develop and implement a communications campaign that encourages the school community to practice environmentally and nutritionally sound principles at school and at home and recognizes students, educators, and parents/guardians for their accomplishments.
4. To encourage policies and programs that help the school community practice environmentally and nutritionally sound principles at school and at home.
GEORGIA GREEN & HEALTHY SCHOOLS (GGHS) PROGRAM
www.greenandhealthy.org
Throughout the program, students and teachers will conduct school-based investigations based on the GGHS assessment area they would like to study based on their IB unit. WIA may choose to complete any number of the following assessment areas:
- air
- energy
- facilities management
- school grounds
- solid waste management
- water
Students will practice real life problem solving skills by collecting data, identifying areas that could use improvement, implementing changes, tracking progress, and sharing results.
