We’re proud that our students, staff, and families have shown a commitment to this staying a Green and Healthy school, even amidst social distancing and virtual learning.
Wesley is honored to be considered an Eco-School. Schools that are certified in the program through the National Wildlife Federation undergo a thorough application process and succeed in organizing and implementing a comprehensive assessment of their school. Eco-Schools USA combines effective “green” management of the school grounds, facilities, and the curriculum. The Wesley family has worked hard on these initiatives over the years!
Last year we were awarded the highest honor for an Eco-School, the prestigious Green Flag Award. Wesley is the first Atlanta Public School to be awarded the Green Flag. Wesley earned the Green Flag Award for our work in three pathways of the Eco-Schools program. The pathways we are continuing to work on are: Energy Reduction (our ‘Last Out, Lights Off and ‘Power Down’ campaigns), Consumption and Waste (our reduce and recycle initiatives, which include our paper, can and bottle recycling in the building, and our bring your own reusable bottle campaign), and Schoolyard Habitat (our vegetable and pollinator gardens).
Last year the Green Team and Green and the PTSA’s Healthy Committee oversaw events such as community garden workdays, garden yoga, trash and recycling activities in PE, and participating in National Walk or Bike to School Day.
Wesley celebrated Arbor Day last May by adding to our garden and planting the new Wesley Orchard! All summer long Wesley families volunteered to keep the garden watered and weeded. We couldn’t have kept the garden thriving without the involvement of everyone. The gardens were planted for summer, including tomatoes, eggplants, cucumbers, squash, berries, and herbs.
Even though we can’t enjoy the garden together in person, we’ve been sharing seasonal recipes you can make with the vegetables and fruit growing in our garden and orchard. We’ve seen you trying out healthy recipes at home and sharing them with us on social media.
Thank you for your commitment to staying green and healthy, and we can’t wait to be back in the garden with you soon!
