In honor of Black History Month, Wesley will be celebrating the accomplishments and culture of African Americans. We will also be illuminating the 100 year anniversary of The Harlem Renaissance. Activities with the theme of “Lift Every Voice” will include: students learning about The Harlem Renaissance, hearing about the untold stories of black history, and researching famous African Americans who have paved the way.
Each day during morning announcements, students will hear a “Did you know that…?” statement—please ask them what they learned! Students will be responsible for creating a “wall” in celebration of the richness of The Harlem Renaissance. They’ll explore art, fashion, music, literature, and political activism.
During the week of February 10, teachers and students will engage in the following activities:
Monday, Feb 10: African American Book Read (Parents, please read a book or poem written by a Black author)
Tuesday, Feb 11: Represent an HBCU (Historically Black College and University) Day
Wednesday, Feb 12: Show and Share a book by black authors
Thursday, Feb 13: Dress in Traditional African Clothing and/or Clothing that is representative of Black Culture
Friday, Feb 14: Door Decoration Contest
MYP students will have a culminating program, “Lift Every Voice,” on February 27 during school hours.
